Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel made a sharp statement regarding the tense situation in the Middle East and major events on the international stage. According to her, Israel’s military operation against Iran can never be equated with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
— One should not be quick to accuse Israel. When the existence of this state is openly denied by Iran or Hamas, it cannot be blamed for trying to defend itself. If you are threatened with destruction, responding is not only natural, but also a necessary measure, said the former chancellor.
Angela Merkel stated that she cannot fully agree with criticism of Israel and especially emphasized that self-defense within the framework of international law is not easy. At the same time, she assessed Russia’s aggression against Ukraine as absolutely illegal and unfounded.
— Ukraine never threatened Russia, but nevertheless was dragged into war, and the country was devastated. This invasion is undoubtedly a violation of international law, commented the politician.
The era of optimism described by Merkel — the general belief in the “end of the Cold War” in the early 1990s — has now become the past as well. In her opinion, these hopes have been dashed by the events of recent decades — the Yugoslav wars, the global financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and Russia’s aggressive foreign policy.
Intensified military clashes between Israel, Iran, and the USA
On June 13, 2025, Israel launched one of the largest operations in its history, carrying out large-scale air strikes against Iran. Tel Aviv’s leadership accused Tehran of conducting a secret nuclear program. As a result of the strikes, leading Iranian military personnel and nuclear scientists were killed.
In response, Iran launched an operation called “True Promise 3” and attacked enemy military targets several times. The war has intensified, and there are multiple exchanges of strikes every day.
On June 22, the United States also joined this process. The US carried out attacks on nuclear facilities in Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordo. In this operation, 125 military aircraft and 75 special bombs were used. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian clearly stated that these attacks would not go unanswered.
In conclusion, the world once again stands on the verge of a very delicate balance. Angela Merkel’s words reveal serious problems in international relations, and the tense situation between Israel, Iran, and the United States raises great concern for all humanity. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
