Secret negotiations between Israel and Syria on security and regional stability issues have led to new disputes, reported aa.com. According to The Jerusalem Post, this process is part of initiatives in recent weeks, organized with the mediation of the US in order to expand the "Abraham Accords" signed by Israel with the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco in 2020.
In these negotiations, the sides of Tel Aviv and Damascus discussed various security guarantees and normalization conditions. The article emphasizes that the Syrian delegation categorically rejected any points that would allow Israel to strike its territory. At the same time, Israel demanded to retain the right to “preventive strikes” against threats in exchange for withdrawing troops from the occupied buffer zone.
Sources note that the negotiations are being held in very cautious and complex conditions. It is stated that at the first stage, the parties may achieve only a “cold peace” and limited cooperation in the field of security. Syria has firmly decided not to retreat from its national interests, while Israel considers security guarantees to be a priority issue.
Experts note that the temporary halt of Israeli strikes on Iran and attempts at regional dialogue through the "Abraham Accords" have begun to occupy an important place in Tel Aviv's foreign policy. Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar stated that if control over the Golan Heights remains with Israel, even establishing normal relations with Syria and Lebanon is possible.
At the same time, although the diplomatic tone has softened in the negotiation process, most of the problems remain unresolved.
