A tragic incident at South Luangwa National Park in Zambia has shocked the international tourism community. Easton Taylor, a 68-year-old British woman, and Alison Taylor, a 67-year-old tourist from New Zealand, were trampled to death by a female elephant with a calf during a guided walking safari.
According to local police chief Robertson Mweemba, attempts by guides to stop the charging elephant by firing warning shots failed. The elephant attacked from behind as the group was moving to another camp after a four-day stay at Big Lagoon Camp, approximately 600 km from Lusaka, the capital.
Both women died on the spot. Authorities have not confirmed whether the two were related. The UK Foreign Office stated that it is assisting the family and liaising with Zambian authorities.
Female elephants are known to be highly protective of their calves. Zambian officials have repeatedly urged tourists to exercise extreme caution when observing wildlife.
