Another heated period has begun in US–Russia relations. US President Donald Trump threatened to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on countries supporting BRICS. He published his statement on the Truth Social platform and made it clear that there would be no exceptions to this decision.
Following Trump’s statement, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt also made a statement, describing BRICS as the main geopolitical obstacle to US interests. According to her, Trump will take all necessary measures to ensure fair treatment of America on the international stage and to protect the country's interests.
Trump's tough stance emerged during the BRICS summit held in Brazil. He did not hide his concern about the possibility of abandoning the dollar in international trade and BRICS becoming the new economic center of the world. Medvedev, as Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, commented on the US’s aggressive policy towards BRICS, saying that they are “on the right path.”
The influence of the BRICS+ bloc is growing every year: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Ethiopia, and Indonesia are members of the alliance, and Uzbekistan has the status of a partner country. It is expected that new members will join the union by the end of the year, and joint economic projects will be developed.
The dispute between Trump and Medvedev did not end there. At the latest meeting at the White House, Trump stated that the supply of weapons to Ukraine had been resumed and expressed dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Medvedev, in turn, said that such contradictory statements should not be taken seriously. In June, the leaders of the two countries were also openly at odds over nuclear weapons and Iran.
