Portugal Considers Recognizing the State of Palestine

An important event on the world political stage: the official leaders of Portugal firmly supported the idea of an agreement based on the two-state principle at an international conference dedicated to the Palestine-Israel conflict held in New York.

According to available information, in September, within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly, extensive consultations between the government, the president, and the parliaments on the issue of official recognition of the State of Palestine will begin in Portugal. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro emphasized that the country stands for a just peace based on the norms of international law.

This initiative was put forward following the conference in New York, aimed at resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the principle of two states. Here, Portugal, in cooperation with a group led by France, signed a statement demanding a peaceful solution to the issue of Palestinian statehood.

It is worth noting that anti-war demonstrations took place in the center of Lisbon in mid-July. Protesters demanded the immediate cessation of military actions in the Gaza Strip and called for special attention to the humanitarian situation.

At the same time, according to recent reports, countries such as France, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Mali are also discussing plans to officially recognize the independence of Palestine.

Portugal’s step is considered an important move toward peace on the international scale. The new political direction may open a new page in the resolution of the Palestine-Israel issue in the global community.

In the coming months, decisions by Lisbon authorities and international organizations on this issue will be in the spotlight of public attention.
