The Struggle to Survive in Gaza
The war in the Gaza Strip has been ongoing for 22 months, leaving thousands of families living in hunger and poverty. Their lives are becoming more difficult by the day.

One of the clearest examples of this situation is the life of the Sobh family, who are temporarily living in a camp in Gaza City.

Fadi and Sobh wake up every morning with the same question: “What can we find for our children today?” They live in a temporary tent by the sea with their six young children. Due to the war, they have had to move several times.

There are only three ways left to find food: getting it from a charity kitchen, trying to get flour from an aid truck, or asking someone. But none of these are guaranteed.

Sobh goes out every day searching for breakfast. Sometimes he finds a handful of lentils, sometimes — nothing. Fadi sets off each time hoping the charity kitchen will be open. The kitchen opens once a week, the line is long, and there isn’t enough food. She used to go to the place where aid trucks were expected, but last month she was wounded in the leg.

“I’ve stopped trying to get food from the trucks. I don’t have the strength,” she says.

Sobh is also weakening. Looking for water, food, and fuel is becoming harder for him. He says he faints from hunger and feels dizzy.
