Political turmoil in Texas: Fleeing Democrats to be arrested
Texas Republicans voted to arrest Democratic lawmakers who blocked the vote on redrawing electoral districts. After the Democrats left the state, there were not enough members remaining to hold a session.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered the missing Democrats to be found, arrested, and returned to the parliament. He accused the Democrats of giving and receiving bribes and called their actions illegal.

The Democrats fled to Illinois and said they would not return to Texas for up to two weeks. The arrest authority given to Texas police only applies within the state, so the move is largely symbolic.

Republicans plan to gain five additional seats in Congress through the new map. This could be a significant political advantage ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
