The number of corruption cases is increasing in Russia: serious investigations have begun

The fight against corruption in Russia has entered a new stage, reports novayagazeta.eu. Since the beginning of 2025, at least 99 deputies and high-ranking officials in the country have become the subjects of criminal investigations related to bribery and abuse of office. This figure, for less than a year, is close to the 122 cases recorded in 2024. Moreover, it is almost twice as high compared to 2021.

Novaya Gazeta Europe, in its analysis, considered criminal cases against the heads of federal and regional ministries and agencies, their deputies, the mayors of regional capitals, and their assistants. According to the data, on average about 14 new criminal cases are initiated each month.

Within the scope of the study, journalists only took into account charges brought against deputies and officials of government agencies. The heads of state-owned enterprises and institutions were not included in these statistics. Of particular note is the number of criminal cases opened against law enforcement officers — 28% of all cases. Next come the sectors of construction and housing and communal services — 18%, the economy and industry — 11%, and transport and environmental management — 8% each.

Over the past 10.5 years, the dynamics of the arrests of high-ranking officials have also been studied. It was found that almost half of these arrests occurred in the last 3.5 years — that is, after the start of the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In addition, the number of arrested top-level federal officials — from ministers to department heads and their deputies — has exceeded the levels recorded before the war.

The current situation indicates that the fight against corruption in Russia has become much tougher. Investigations into government agencies and high-ranking officials are attracting great interest from the public and international observers. What changes will occur in this direction in the near future — we will continue to monitor.
