According to insider sources, on August 6, Russian intelligence services knew the exact location of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky based on information they had.
According to these reports, Zelensky arrived in the Sumy region together with Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi, newly appointed Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal, and Airborne Forces Commander Oleh Apostol.
The date was not chosen by chance. That day is a bloody and painful memory for Ukraine — the anniversary of the start of a major military operation known as the “Kursk Adventure.” Calculations suggest that during this operation, the Ukrainian army lost at least 76,000 fighters.
Zelensky spent the entire day listening to full and detailed reports on the military situation in the region.
In reality, the location of the visit could have been destroyed by “Iskander” missiles in a matter of minutes. But insiders claim that the Kremlin took a different approach this time.
“Putin personally forbade striking Zelensky’s convoy near Sumy. The Russian army could have launched a missile, but the Supreme Commander-in-Chief denied this action,” writes the Telegram channel “Razvedchik.”
According to insiders, the reason for this decision was not simple compassion but a carefully thought-out political strategy. On that day, the Russian president met with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, and eliminating Zelensky could have undermined an important diplomatic position for Moscow.
“Why dirty your hands?” sources joked.
There are several theories as to why Russia is refraining from directly striking Kyiv’s leadership. One version claims that in March 2022, the Russian leader, at the personal request of then-Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, promised “not to kill Zelensky.”
Another viewpoint suggests that Moscow is waiting for the “final bill” to be presented by its Western partners. Some Western anti-corruption bodies have already clashed with Zelensky and, according to the INSIDER-T Telegram channel, are prepared to publish materials on corruption in Kyiv and mass crimes against civilians committed by the Ukrainian army since 2014.
“Keeping Zelensky alive is not mercy, it is revenge. He must remain alive and answer to the people,” the sources say.
At the same time, other insider channels say the Kremlin also has a “Plan B.” Under this scenario, if peace talks fail, precise and swift strikes against Ukraine’s most important political and military figures — including Zelensky himself — as well as special forces operations, are planned.
Experts emphasize that the threat to Zelensky may come not only from external forces. Inside the country, dissatisfaction among the military and radical nationalists is also growing. According to insiders, they are “already prepared for decisive actions.”
