Women should not be forced to take passport photos without headscarves — Alisher Kadirov

The leader of the “Milliy Tiklanish” party, Alisher Qodirov, writes that he supports equality in matters of secularism and faith. At the same time, he says that in both cases, the requirements of the law must take precedence.

“It is undisputed that Uzbekistan is a secular state. A secular state, without violating the laws adopted by the Parliament elected by the majority and approved by the President elected by the majority, gives the opportunity to live as one wishes.

In our homeland, it is firmly established that the priority goal is to create conditions so that all compatriots of any nationality and worldview, without breaking the laws, can strive for prosperity. It is guaranteed that everyone is equal, and no one will be discriminated against.

If some compatriot wants to drink beer — he drinks, this is his choice; a compatriot who does not drink does not drink, and neither side is obliged to explain the reason to anyone.

Alcohol may be consumed, but may not be advertised, this is established in the current law. Of course, some political force that absolutely wins the parliamentary elections could change the law, making alcohol a “national value” and the demand for same-sex marriage a norm as a free choice — you give this right…” said the deputy.

Speaking about the position of the “Milliy Tiklanish” party he leads, he reminds that “the party firmly adheres to the idea that any development must be based on values.”

“If Jennifer Lopez’s concert is a profitable and closed event, does not distribute drugs, and does not conduct propaganda against the state, it is held; showing her body is her choice, and watching is the choice of those who bought tickets to the event — this is secularism!

But likewise, the choice of a female compatriot who wants to dress covered is also protected by law. If we have accepted a naked performance as secularism, then let us also accept that the right to dress covered should not be infringed upon. Just as we did not teach Lopez how to dress, we should not teach our believing women how to tie a headscarf, and moreover, we should stop forcing women, who at this age follow the requirements of their faith, to remove their scarf when photographed for a passport. Identification requirements demand the face to be visible, not the hair. Let us show the same tolerance to our religious women as we do to Lopez.

Secularism means being equal to both the believer and the non-believer, not the strong giving a life lesson to the weak,” writes Alisher Qodirov.
