According to three sources, Israel and South Sudan are in talks about resettling Palestinians from the Gaza Strip in South Sudan. No agreement has been reached yet, but discussions are ongoing.
Under the plan, people from Gaza, devastated by almost two years of war, could be relocated to South Sudan, a country still facing political and ethnic conflicts. However, the idea is being rejected by Palestinians and many other countries.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has proposed strengthening military control in Gaza and for Palestinians to voluntarily leave the territory. Palestinian leaders compared this to the 1948 “Nakba” and firmly rejected the proposal.
South Sudan’s foreign ministry had earlier described reports about such plans as “baseless”. However, according to the sources, the matter was discussed last month in Israel during a meeting with South Sudan’s foreign minister.
Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel said that during her meetings in Juba this week, the issue of relocation was not raised. She said the discussions were mainly about foreign policy, international organisations, and the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan.
