Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will travel to Washington on Monday to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump. He will be accompanied by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
European leaders want to support Zelensky and secure strong security guarantees for Ukraine. The meeting is expected to cover assistance against Russian aggression, territorial issues, and economic restrictions.
Last week, Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. According to sources, Putin demanded that Ukraine hand over a significant part of its eastern regions, in exchange for his readiness to freeze the front. Zelensky rejected these conditions.
The participating states are interested in arranging a trilateral meeting between Trump, Putin, and Zelensky. Their goal is to provide guaranteed support to Ukraine and, if necessary, increase pressure on Moscow.
Russia, however, is not giving up on its demands. Putin wants full control over Donetsk (a major industrial city and regional center in eastern Ukraine) and warned Europe “not to stage plots.” Zelensky stressed that the most important condition for ending the war is the immediate cessation of fighting.
