In the Kyrgyz Republic, a decision has been made to close correctional colonies and modernize the penal system. This was announced on August 19 at a briefing by the country’s Minister of Justice, Ayaz Bayetov.
“There are penal institutions – prisons and correctional colonies, but prisoners practically did not go there. They went there only for registration and control. Then we introduced the probation system, and the two systems started to duplicate each other. There was also a shortage of staff. Now, correctional colonies are being closed, and all prisoners will be transferred to the probation system,” Bayetov explained.
According to the minister, more than 10 correctional colonies will be closed. The relevant decree was signed on August 4 by Kyrgyzstan’s President Sadyr Japarov. This decision aims to simplify the penal system, use resources efficiently, and integrate prisoners into society.
