New “Stratus” coronavirus strain spreading in Russia

A completely new type of coronavirus — HFG “Stratus” strain — has been identified in the Russian Federation. According to official data from Rospotrebnadzor, 114 cases of infection with this strain have been recorded across the country.

It is reported that 54 percent of the detected cases are in the capital, Moscow. The remaining cases have mainly been registered in the Magadan, Sverdlovsk, and Leningrad regions.

It should be noted that this strain was first identified in the world on January 27, 2025, in Canada. In Russia, the first case was registered on April 24 of the same year and officially documented.

Officials emphasize that the new strain is highly contagious and can spread quickly. However, it generally causes mild illness. According to doctors, the main symptoms include hoarseness of voice and mild signs similar to the previously widespread “Omicron” strain.

Epidemiologists advise the population to remain vigilant, follow preventive measures, and undergo medical examinations if necessary.

Experts believe that while this strain may not pose a major threat, preventing its large-scale spread is of critical importance.
