World Health Organization declares emergency over dangerous Ebola strain

The World Health Organization has declared a state of emergency due to the spread of the Ebola virus in Africa. It is reported that this is the second-highest level of threat to public health.
According to DW, the situation has not yet reached the level of a pandemic. However, the organization emphasizes that the spread of the virus poses a serious threat.
The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has spread in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. So far, 88 people have died due to this virus, and more than 330 cases of infection have been recorded.
The WHO warns that the actual number of infected people may be higher than the official figures. The situation is said to be particularly complex in the Ituri province, where military conflicts are observed.
According to the DRC Minister of Health, Samuel-Roger Kamba, there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for this strain. He stated that the mortality rate of the disease could reach up to 50 percent.
This is recorded as the 17th wave of the Ebola epidemic in Congo. The previous outbreak was observed in August 2025, when 34 people died.
