In Iran, a birth certificate was not issued for a baby with a Turkish name

In the Iranian city of Julfa, a newborn baby has not yet been issued an official birth certificate because of the Turkish name chosen by the parents. This situation is causing deep concern and anxiety for the family and local civil registration authorities.

The parents named the child Alihon, but the Civil Status Registration Department refused to register the name, stating that it does not exist in the system and has a “Turkish-Arab origin.” As a result, the child’s documents have still not been processed, even though he was born on June 2, and 85 days have passed. Therefore, vaccination and other necessary medical services cannot be provided.

The parents expressed dissatisfaction with this decision and applied to the court, but the legal process has not yet started and the case has not been considered. This creates fear and anxiety in the family.

According to the “Free Iran” channel, such a situation is causing broad discussion among citizens and the public. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian previously instructed to lift the bans on Turkish names. This decision resulted from social campaigns initiated by Azerbaijani Turks, such as “Grandfather’s Name” and “Baby Name.” As part of these initiatives, more than 15,000 citizens signed a petition requesting permission to use Turkish names.

Nevertheless, in some regions, Turkish names are still not officially registered. This causes additional fear and concern for parents and the local community because their children may be deprived of rights and access to medical services.
