The famous Masala y Maiz restaurant in Mexico City has attracted wide attention with its unusual initiative. The owners allow guests to choose any dish from the menu and pay for it according to their means.
The aim of this initiative is to bring together people with different income levels at the same table. On special days, the restaurant does not issue a bill, but instead gives guests an envelope. Each person decides how much they can pay. Some pay more, others less, and sometimes people leave gifts instead of money.
Masala y Maiz was recently awarded a Michelin star. This recognition helped promote the initiative more widely. On August 27 this year, more than 20 other restaurants in Mexico City also joined this initiative.
The restaurant owners hope that in the future this idea will spread to other countries. In their view, such initiatives not only reduce economic inequality but also strengthen solidarity in society.
