Russian President Vladimir Putin called on the Slovak leadership to impose an energy blockade in order to exert additional pressure on Ukraine. He emphasized that by cutting off gas and power supplies in the reverse direction, Kyiv quickly realizes the need to limit its actions in encroaching on the interests of other countries. Putin stated this during talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitso in Beijing on Tuesday, September 2nd. He also strongly criticized Ukraine's drone strikes on the Druzhba oil pipeline.
As the only European leader who came to China to participate in the ceremony organized in connection with the "80th anniversary of the victory over militaristic Japan in the Second World War," Robert Fico also strongly condemned Kyiv's actions. During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on September 5th, he promised to prioritize oil pipeline security.
During the meeting, Putin thanked Fitso for Slovakia's independent foreign policy course. The Slovak Prime Minister, in turn, made a sharp statement comparing the European Union to a "frog sitting at the bottom of a well and unable to see what's happening in the world." He emphasized that "I have great respect for the European Union, but it does not have the opportunity to adequately respond to global events." At the same time, Fitso openly stated that his country is interested in continuing cooperation with Russia in the energy sector and purchasing oil and gas from Moscow.
