Two fetuses removed from baby's womb in India

In India, an unusual and extremely complex surgical operation was performed in medical history. In a hospital in Gurgaon, Haryana state, a one-month-old baby underwent surgery during which two undeveloped embryos were successfully removed from her abdomen, reports The Times of India.

According to the information, this condition is known in medicine as “fetus in fetu” and is extremely rare — occurring in about one in 500,000 cases. Usually, such an anomaly develops in the early stages of pregnancy: one of the twins does not develop fully and becomes enclosed inside the other.

Doctors explained that the baby’s mother had been expected to give birth to triplets, but during pregnancy one fetus “absorbed” the other two. Twenty days after birth, the baby girl was admitted to the hospital due to abdominal swelling and refusal to eat. During the examination, tumor-like structures compressing her stomach were discovered, which during surgery turned out to be underdeveloped embryos.

Fifteen experienced doctors took part in the operation. For two hours they carefully removed the tissue, making sure not to damage the infant’s internal organs.

“This was truly a very rare case. We found not one, but two embryos inside a one-month-old baby. The most difficult task was to carry out the surgery with such precision in such a tiny body,” said one of the doctors.

According to specialists, after the surgery the baby quickly began to feel better, and her condition is currently stable.
