Turkey’s prosecutor decided to detain the mayor of Istanbul’s Bayrampasa district and 47 others. They are accused of corruption, bribery, and violating state regulations.
Police carried out raids at 72 locations in the morning, seizing documents and detaining suspects. The raids were reported to have been conducted on a large scale.
Mayor Hasan Mutlu rejected the accusations and called the investigation a “political operation.” He is a member of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).
Over the past year, pressure on the CHP and municipalities it governs has increased. Hundreds of party members have been arrested, and a court ruling regarding the CHP leader is expected in the coming days.
