The US has once again rejected a UN Security Council decision calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The other 14 countries supported the document. US representative Morgan Ortagus said the text did not clearly condemn Hamas and failed to recognize Israel’s right to self-defense.
The decision described the situation in Gaza as “tragic” and called on Israel to lift restrictions on humanitarian aid. However, the US opposition caused dissatisfaction among other countries.
Palestinian representative Riyad Mansour called the decision “regrettable.” Representatives of Pakistan and Algeria also voiced their disapproval and apologized to the Palestinians. According to them, this decision prevented the Council from fulfilling its duty.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces continue their offensive in Gaza. The UN humanitarian office described the situation as “catastrophic.” Local reports say more than 65,000 people have been killed since October 2023.
