On Thursday, September 18, a bloody incident occurred involving the driver of a truck carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. According to information released by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a Jordanian driver shot and killed two Israelis at the Allenby checkpoint.
The Israeli military stated that the attacker attempted to cross the post armed and was quickly neutralized by security forces. According to Israel's Magen David Adom ambulance service, the attacker was armed with a pistol and a knife.
According to reports, one of the victims was around 20 years old, and the other was a man over 60 years old. They received first aid at the scene, but died from their injuries.
The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reacted to the incident, calling it a "crime" and emphasizing that it could jeopardize the humanitarian aid delivery to the Gaza Strip.
The Ministry also called on the international community to strongly condemn this incident. Jordanian officials noted that such attacks not only cause premature deaths but also create serious obstacles to the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The Israeli side stated that after the incident, security measures were further strengthened, and inspections at the Allenby checkpoint were intensified. The military emphasized that such incidents will be quickly suppressed and border security will be ensured.
At the same time, it is no secret that the conflicts in the Palestinian-Israeli region are escalating. At a time when, on the one hand, humanitarian aid is extremely necessary for the population of the Gaza Strip, on the other hand, security issues complicate the transportation process.
As a reminder, the Allenby checkpoint is one of the main humanitarian corridors between the Gaza Strip and Jordan.
