Germany expects record potato harvest in 25 years

A historic result can be recorded in German agriculture. According to the Ministry of Agriculture of the country and the publication Agrarheute, an unprecedented harvest of potatoes is expected in 2025.

According to official reports, German farmers will harvest 5.3% more potatoes this year compared to last year. In total, this amounts to more than 13.4 million tons of harvest.

Potato yields are 17 percent higher than the usual annual indicators, and the cultivated area has also expanded by 6.7 percent. It was noted that the total sown area has reached 301 thousand hectares. It is expected that an average of 44 tons of potatoes will be harvested per hectare, which is an unprecedented figure in recent years.

The price issue wasn't as beneficial for farmers as expected. According to calculations, 1 centner (100 kg) of potatoes brings an average income of 14.9 euros to the farmer. However, prices on the market fluctuate sharply, ranging from 10 to 24 euros. The last time such a decrease in potato prices was recorded was in the fall of 2021.

The abundance of the harvest created convenience for German consumers. According to the data, in July, the price of potatoes decreased by 18.9% compared to last year. This has a positive impact on the daily expenditures of the population.

At the same time, due to high and low yields, farmers are forced to send a certain part of the potatoes for livestock needs or to biogas production enterprises. Officials emphasized that price increases are not expected in the near future.
