Portland leadership considered Trump’s actions unconstitutional

The state of Oregon and its largest city, Portland, have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government, local media reported.

According to the lawsuit, submitted on Sunday, September 28, President Donald Trump exceeded his authority by ordering National Guard troops from Oregon into federal service in response to protest demonstrations.

Lawyers stated that such a decision violates the principles of the U.S. Constitution and, instead of stabilizing unrest, could threaten public safety. “The provocative and arbitrary actions of the defendants are likely to undermine security and fuel public discontent,” the document says.

The lawsuit names President Trump, Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, and relevant federal agencies as defendants.

Earlier the same day, Defense Secretary Hegseth announced a memorandum calling for the “immediate activation of 200 Oregon National Guard soldiers into federal duty for a 60-day period.”
