The month of October will present truly magical sights in the sky above the capital. According to senior researcher at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Evgeniya Kravchenko, two major and four minor meteor streams will be observed this month.
The first major meteor shower – Orionids – will last from October 2 to November 7. Its peak activity will occur on the night of October 22. Experts note that around 21:30 is the most convenient time for stargazing. This time the conditions will be ideal, as the peak coincides with the new moon phase.
The second major event – Draconids – will be visible from October 6 to 10. Its brightest phase will occur on October 9. Kravchenko advises looking toward the constellation of the Big Dipper to find these meteors. However, the strong light of the Moon may partially interfere with observations.
Minor meteor showers will also enrich October:
Camelopardalids – October 5;
Delta Aurigids – October 11;
Southern Taurids – October 13;
Epsilon Geminids – October 18.
The best time to observe them is around 22:00.
Experts recommend that those wishing to enjoy these celestial shows travel outside the city. Find a wide open area and wait 15–20 minutes without using your phone or any strong light source. During this time, your eyes will adjust to the darkness, making the meteor showers appear brighter. For lighting the path, a red flashlight is recommended.
