On September 30 in the evening, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Cebu island in the Philippines. At least 72 people were killed and more than 300 injured. Many houses, churches and roads were damaged.
As a result of the earthquake, more than 40,000 people were forced to leave their homes. Residents are staying in temporary tents or sleeping outdoors. Some had to use plastic bags to protect themselves from the rain.
Rescuers are searching for survivors under the rubble. At the same time, shortages of food, drinking water and fuel remain a major problem. The military has also been involved in relief efforts.
Cebu has previously suffered from severe natural disasters. Now residents are once again helping each other cope with the aftermath of the earthquake.
