At the ceremony in Oslo, the Nobel Committee announced that it would award the 2025 Peace Prize to Venezuelan political figure Maria Corina Machado. Committee Chair Jørgen Vatne Fridnes stated that the award is being given "for the relentless efforts of the Venezuelan people to resolutely defend their democratic rights."
This year, a total of 338 candidates were nominated for the award: 244 individuals and 94 organizations. For comparison, last year 286 candidates (197 individuals, 89 organizations) were registered, while the record figure was in 2016 - 376 candidates.
Laureates of recent years
- 2024: Nihon Hidankyo - Council of Victims of Atomic Bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, for its work on nuclear disarmament.
- 2023: Nargis Mohammadi - for supporting women's rights and human freedoms in Iran.
- 2022: Russian organization "Memorial," Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties, and Ales Belyatsky from Belarus - for their contribution to the protection of human rights.
- 2021: Dmitry Muratov and Maria Ressa - for courage in defending freedom of the press and democracy.
Brief about Nobel
The Nobel Prizes in Physiology/Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, and Peace were established by the will of the inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel, and have been awarded since 1901.
This recognition of Machado once again demonstrates the global significance of the struggle for democracy and civic values in Latin America.
