On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. The main topic of discussion was the potential sale of long-range “Tomahawk” cruise missiles to Kyiv. The Ukrainian side emphasized that these weapons are urgently needed.
The meeting took place one day after Trump’s long phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite Moscow’s warnings that such a deal could further escalate the conflict, Trump showed determination to continue military support for Ukraine.
“I think President Putin wants to end this war,” Trump told reporters before the talks. At the same time, he noted that the issue of selling “Tomahawks” would be handled carefully.
Zelensky, in turn, said that after the situation in the Gaza Strip, Trump had gained “strong motivation to stop Russia.” The American leader replied, “We will talk about it. Ukraine needs weapons — Europe will pay for it — we just want to end the war.”
According to Trump, the “Tomahawks” are “very dangerous weapons,” and their delivery could escalate the conflict. Therefore, Washington is taking a “cautious approach.”
The U.S. president stressed that saving human lives remains his top priority and claimed that “he has already saved millions of lives” through his peace initiatives. Ending the war in Ukraine, he added, would be part of that mission.
Zelensky’s visit was not limited to military aid discussions. He also proposed a business project in the energy sector — storing American liquefied natural gas in Ukrainian facilities, which would allow the U.S. to expand its presence in the European energy market.
On Thursday, Zelensky met with U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and executives of major American energy companies, highlighting the importance of rebuilding Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and expanding American business involvement.
While no concrete deal on “Tomahawks” has been reached yet, analysts interpret the talks as a symbol of Washington’s strategic support for Kyiv.
