The atmosphere at the White House once again drew public attention. This time, the incident occurred between President Donald Trump’s press secretary, Caroline Leavitt, and a representative of HuffPost, HuffPost reported.
During the press conference on October 17, a journalist asked why Budapest had been chosen as the location for the Trump–Putin meeting. Although the question seemed ordinary to many, Leavitt’s reply was sharp and unexpected.
“It was your mother who chose it,” she told the journalist. Her response stunned the audience. Leavitt didn’t stop there — she went on to harshly criticize the journalist. According to her, the HuffPost representative is “a far-left writer” who is not taken seriously even by colleagues in the media. “People in the press won’t tell you that, but they think so,” she said.
The press secretary called the journalist’s questions “insincere and foolish,” saying she was tired of such “biased” inquiries.
The same journalist became known in 2021 for writing a book about Donald Trump that included the phrase “useful idiot” in its title. Because of this, the relationship between the two sides was likely tense from the beginning.
After the incident, Trump defended his secretary during a conversation with reporters. When asked whether Leavitt should be replaced, he rejected the idea. “That will never happen,” Trump said firmly. He also added a provocative remark: “That face… and those lips — they move like a machine gun, don’t they?”
Caroline Leavitt began her career as Trump’s campaign press secretary during his 2024 presidential campaign. Her working style is described as firm and aggressive. In January 2025, she officially assumed the position of White House press secretary.
At 28, Leavitt became the youngest person in U.S. history to hold the post. Her sharp statements often attract public debate. Some consider her bold and outspoken, while others accuse her of crossing professional ethical boundaries.
At the same time, Trump’s trust in his secretary signifies strong unity within his political team. However, public opinion is divided — some praise Leavitt’s determination, while others argue that her rough tone is inappropriate for the White House.
