Paris: Priceless items stolen from the Louvre Museum
Paris’ Louvre Museum reported a theft of valuable jewelry on Sunday morning. According to police, three or four thieves used a crane to break a window, entered the area where France’s royal jewelry was kept, and escaped on motorcycles.

Culture Minister Rachida Dati said the theft was carried out professionally. The thieves took the items within four minutes, but no one was harmed. One item was found outside during their escape.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the theft had been planned in advance and that the criminals might have carried out similar attacks before. A special police unit is conducting the investigation. No injuries were reported.

The Louvre is one of the world’s most visited museums, with 8.7 million visitors in 2024. Officials had previously warned of the need to strengthen museum security and renovate old exhibition halls.

The incident was a major blow to France’s culture and history. The museum has been temporarily closed and visitors’ safety ensured. Police continue the investigation to capture the thieves and recover the stolen items as soon as possible.
