A pensioner transferred $350,000 to a fraudster who introduced himself as a "Squid Game" star

A woman living in Miryan, South Korea, became a victim of Li Jong-je scammers who introduced themselves as the star of the "Squid Game" series. Using images created by artificial intelligence, they won him money by convincing him that a real actor was communicating with him. This was reported by ChosunBiz EN.

The scammers contacted the woman through social networks. "This is actor Lee Jong-je. "I wanted to talk to the fans," the message says. Later, they continued communication on the KakaoTalk messenger, where the "actor" began to address the woman as "pleasant" and "dear," gradually forming the illusion of intimacy.

Yulduz, believing that she was genuinely interested in communicating with a retired woman, began sending her money. "He said that when he returned to Korea, he would return them. "I trusted him," he told the police.

Photos of the ID and driver's license, falsified using neural networks, helped the fraudster gain the victim's trust. He came up with various reasons to ask for money, for example, he got stuck at a foreign airport and can't pay for the flight. "He said that when he returned to Korea, he would return them. "I believed him," the woman admitted.

One day, she transferred approximately $7,500 to pay for the VIP ticket for a face-to-face meeting with the actor. However, the live introduction did not take place. When the fraudster's demands intensified and the transfer amount exceeded half a million dollars, the woman finally contacted the police.

The Kensan-Namdo Provincial Police Department confirmed that it is investigating a case of sexual fraud using artificial intelligence technologies. Unfortunately, the chances of returning the lost funds to the woman remain very low.
