
Former presidential advisor Yerzhan Babakumarov has died in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, Orda reported. According to reports, he sustained serious injuries during an altercation with an acquaintance and died at the scene.
The incident occurred at night. According to official information, the 56-year-old Babakumarov had an argument with a 36-year-old man, which escalated into a fight. The police statement said that "during the altercation, the victim sustained life-threatening injuries and died."
Currently, a criminal case has been opened for the murder, the suspect has been detained and placed in a temporary detention facility. Investigative bodies are investigating the exact causes of the conflict and how the incident occurred.
Yerzhan Babakumarov was born on March 2, 1969, in the Taldykorgan region of Kazakhstan (now Almaty region). In 1991, he graduated from Al-Farabi Kazakh State University with a degree in Political History. From this year, he began working in public service.
Since 1996, he has held responsible positions in various government structures: first in the Almaty city administration, and then in the presidential administration, during the reign of Nursultan Nazarbayev. He also worked in the Ministry of Culture and the Prime Minister's office, actively participating in the country's political life.
After Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was elected president in 2019, Babakumarov served as his advisor for several months. During this period, he was mentioned as one of the people who advised on reforms in public administration and strategic decisions.
Subsequently, from 2020 to February 2022, he served as Deputy Mayor of Almaty. He resigned in January 2022 after the unrest in the country and has not appeared on the political scene since then.
Yerzhan Babakumarov is remembered by his colleagues and former like-minded people as an experienced official who worked diligently in public service for many years. His life was devoted to activity, social reforms, and governance.
