Tehran on the verge of running out of water: two weeks of water left

The situation with drinking water in Iran’s capital, Tehran, has sharply worsened, reported Al Jazeera. Due to a historic drought, the city’s main water sources are rapidly drying up.

According to data, the Amir Kabir Dam currently holds only 14 million cubic meters of water — just 8 percent of its total capacity. Experts warn that this volume will last only two weeks.

In recent months, Tehran has seen almost no rainfall. A year ago, the same dam contained 86 million cubic meters of water, but now this amount has nearly vanished.

The capital, home to more than 10 million people, consumes around 3 million cubic meters of water daily. In some districts, water supply has already been temporarily suspended, and public dissatisfaction is growing.

Experts note that the water shortage is not only due to drought but also to overuse of groundwater, poor management, and intensifying climate change. A similar problem is occurring in neighboring Iraq, where water levels in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers have fallen by 27 percent, leading to a serious humanitarian crisis.
