Due to a sharp increase in bear attacks in the northern regions of Japan, the government mobilized an army. According to the Associated Press, since April, bears have attacked dozens of people, 12 of whom have died.
According to government statistics, more than 8,000 bears have appeared in areas close to populated areas since the beginning of the year. This is six times more than last year. The worst situation is observed in Akita Prefecture - residents are afraid to leave their homes in the evening, and the forest roads are deserted.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaiti decided to mobilize the army to assist civilian services. The soldiers are unarmed - they use shields, nets, and special sprays. Their task is to set traps, catch animals, and assist hunters.
Experts attribute the increase in bear attacks to climate change and food shortages. Animals are increasingly approaching rural areas where the population is declining, and the reduction in the number of hunters is exacerbating this problem.
