Journalist who asked question about Gaza lost job - scandal in Brussels

Gabriele Nunziati, a correspondent for the Italian news agency Nova, was fired after asking a question about Gaza at a European Commission briefing.

At a press conference in Brussels on October 13, the journalist asked European Commission officials about the issue of compensation for the post-war reconstruction of Gaza. He reminded that the European Union is demanding compensation from Russia for Ukraine and asked whether this principle also applies to Israel.

Commission representative Paola Pigno refused to answer the question. A few days later, Member of the European Parliament Gaetano Pedulla announced the dismissal of the journalist. Nunciati confirmed the news to the Anadolu Agency, but refused to disclose the details.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has previously been criticized for openly supporting Israel. Therefore, it is said that this incident has once again ignited discussions about European press freedom.
