Scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences have once again brought to the agenda the issue of diverting water from the Ob River, one of the largest rivers in Siberia, to Central Asia. This idea was also discussed under the name "Turning Point" during the Soviet era, but it was not implemented at that time.
Now specialists are reviewing this plan based on modern technologies. The main principle of the project is the transportation of Siberian water through special closed plastic pipelines up to 2100 kilometers and its delivery to the territory of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
Scientists told RBK that serious discussions have begun on the practical assessment of this area, the study of engineering capabilities, and the determination of the impact on the ecosystem. At the same time, it is noted that the implementation of the project could serve to mitigate the water shortage in the Aral Sea region.
Although a final decision has not yet been made, the idea of transferring Siberian waters to Central Asia has once again returned to the center of public attention.
