The Tueights Glacier, known as the "Doomsday Glacier," is about to melt

Scientists are seriously concerned about the rapid melting of the "Doomsday Glacier" - the Tueyts Glacier - in Antarctica. According to Mirror, if this giant ice layer breaks apart and falls into the ocean, the sea level could rise by 1-2 meters. This increases the likelihood of flooding megacities such as New York, London, Amsterdam, Bangkok, and Mumbai.

A study published in the journal Nature Geoscience states that cracks in the glacier have increased dramatically in recent years. Experts emphasize that rapidly rotating "girdle structures" under the ice attract warm water currents, further accelerating the melting process.

According to scientists, since the 1980s, the Tueyts Glacier has lost more than 600 billion tons of ice. As global warming continues, similar turbulent processes can be observed in other parts of Antarctica.

The width of the Tueyts Glacier is 120 kilometers, and its area is 190,000 square kilometers - almost the size of Florida. However, its disappearance could have catastrophic consequences not only for megacities but also for low-lying countries such as the Maldives, Tuvalu, Kiribati, and Polynesia.

Scientists had already warned at the beginning of 2025 that the shelf layer under this glacier could erode within the next decade.
