According to the annual global retirement index by “International Living,” Greece has been recognized as the most suitable destination in the world for retirees in 2026, thanks to its thousands of islands and clear climate.
According to the research, the average life expectancy of modern people has sharply increased over the past decades, which is why many retirees prefer to spend the final part of their lives abroad. Taking this trend into account, the index was formed based on criteria such as living costs, healthcare quality, housing market, visa procedures, climate, and ease of integration into the local community.
Greece received high scores in almost all these categories. The country offers retirees a comfortable, cost-efficient, and peaceful lifestyle, as well as favorable opportunities for obtaining residency. In particular, through the “Golden Visa” program, foreigners can obtain a residence permit in exchange for a real estate investment of 250,000 euros.
In this ranking, Portugal and Spain, which had been leading for many years, placed lower this time due to visa restrictions and rising living costs. The list also includes countries such as Italy, Malaysia, and France.
