The Polish Border Guard announced on December 11, 2025, that more than 180 illegal migrants had entered Poland through an underground tunnel near the settlement of Narewka in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. Border guards, military personnel, and police managed to detain over 130 individuals who had used the tunnel. Efforts to locate the remaining migrants are ongoing.
According to Polish Border Guard spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrzej Juźwiak, the tunnel was several dozen meters long, with an approximate height of 1.5 meters. The entrance to the tunnel was located 50 meters from the border on the Belarusian side, while the exit was 10 meters from a barrier on the Polish side.
Electronic surveillance systems revealed that more than 180 foreign nationals had used the tunnel. The majority of those detained were citizens of Afghanistan and Pakistan, while individuals holding passports from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh also crossed into Poland using the tunnel.
According to the Polish Border Guard, four tunnels have been discovered under the Belarus-Poland border in the Podlaskie region in 2025. Local law enforcement also arrested two drivers who were planning to transport the migrants to Western European countries. The suspects were identified as a 69-year-old Polish man and a 49-year-old Lithuanian national.
An estimated 30,000 people attempt to cross the Belarus-Poland border illegally each year. These figures have remained unchanged since 2021, despite the installation of steel walls, drones, and thermal imaging cameras along the border.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government has declared its commitment to maintaining its anti-migration policies. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that financial assistance would be provided to Poland to strengthen border security efforts.
