The Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) unit, in collaboration with the rebel organization known as “Chernaya Iskra” (Black Spark), struck two Russia-flagged ships — “Kompozitor Rakhmaninov” and “Askar-Saridja” — in the Caspian Sea. These vessels were being used for military purposes and had been sanctioned by the United States for transporting military cargo between Iran and Russia. This information was published on Friday, December 12, via the Telegram channel of the UAF Special Operations Forces.
Details of the attack in the Caspian Sea
According to the report, the incident took place in the Caspian Sea near the shores of the Republic of Kalmykia. At the time of the attack, the ships were reportedly transporting weapons and military equipment intended for use in the war against Ukraine.
The UAF stated: "Representatives of the rebel organization provided detailed information about the route and cargo of the targeted ships."
There is no exact information about the consequences of the attack. Russian authorities and the Russian Ministry of Defense have not commented on these claims regarding strikes on the ships in the Caspian Sea.
The Ukrainian military noted: “The Special Operations Forces continue to deploy asymmetric actions to weaken the offensive capabilities of the Russian Army.”
Oil platforms targeted
A source from the Ukrainian security services, speaking to DW, disclosed that long-range drones belonging to the Alpha Special Operations Center, which operates under Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), also targeted an oil rig in the Caspian Sea named after Filanovskiy.
The platform is owned by the “Lukoil-Nizhnevolzhskneft” company and was shut down as a result of the attack.
According to the SBU source, this marks the first time Ukraine has targeted Russian oil extraction infrastructure in the Caspian Sea.
