Ukraine abandons NATO for peace with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced that he has abandoned the intention to join NATO in order to end the war with Russia. Instead, Ukraine seeks security guarantees from Western countries.

Zelenskiy met in Berlin with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The talks were hosted by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and other European leaders are expected to join.

According to the president, security guarantees from the US, Europe, and other countries could protect Ukraine from future Russian attacks. The guarantees should be legally binding.

Direct talks between Ukraine and Russia have not taken place. Meanwhile, Russian attacks on energy and water infrastructure have left hundreds of thousands without power, and the war continues.
