A large police raid in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, led to serious consequences. On October 28, at least 121 people were killed during the operation in the Penha and Alemao areas. Several police officers were among the dead.
Police launched the raid to arrest leaders of a criminal group. However, it is reported that information about the operation leaked beforehand. As a result, armed individuals resisted, and long-lasting gunfights broke out.
During the raid, life in the area came to a halt. Schools were closed, transportation was restricted, and residents were forced to hide in their homes. In some places, cars were set on fire and bullet marks were left on the streets.
The government has described the raid as successful. However, human rights groups and local residents say the number of deaths was too high. They are calling for an open and fair investigation into the incident.
