US targets 70 Islamic State sites

US forces carried out a major strike against the Islamic State group in Syria. The attack was in response to an assault on US forces in Palmyra. Military planes and helicopters took part, hitting more than 70 locations.

Two US soldiers and one civilian interpreter were killed. Three more soldiers were injured. The US said several Islamic State members were killed during the strikes.

Jordanian air forces also took part in the operation. The goal was to maintain security in the region and prevent armed group activities. The Islamic State has not commented on the attack.

US officials stressed that this strike does not start a war. They said US forces will continue to protect their soldiers and partners in the region.
