Large-scale air attacks carried out by Russia have caused serious damage to Ukraine’s energy system. President Volodymyr Zelensky said that more than 600 drones and over 30 missiles were used during the attacks. The main strikes targeted power stations and key infrastructure facilities.
The energy operator Ukrenergo reported that emergency power outages have been introduced in several regions. Disruptions in electricity supply are affecting the daily lives of millions of people. Repair work is expected to begin once security conditions improve.
The attacks are taking place amid cold weather conditions, further complicating the situation. In some areas, air temperatures are expected to fall below zero, increasing the demand for heating and electricity.
The Ukrainian government has urged the population to use electricity sparingly. Officials said that restoring the energy system is a priority task and that all available resources are being mobilised for this purpose.
