The Germans strongly condemn the US military operation in Venezuela

The US military intervention in South America caused a wave of serious discontent and concern among the German public. According to the results of the recently published social survey "Deutschlandtrend," confidence in Washington in German society has decreased to a record level.

Radical resistance to military intervention

A study conducted by the Infratest dimap Institute showed that the attitude of the Germans towards US policy has fundamentally deteriorated:

  • 72% of respondents consider the military attack on Venezuela completely groundless.
  • 82 percent of the population are deeply concerned about the fact that the principle of "the right of the strong" is becoming more important in world politics than international law.
  • Half of the Germans are demanding that the German government openly criticize Washington, not fearing a deterioration in relations with Donald Trump.

Historical decline in confidence

For the Germans, the USA has now lost its position as a reliable ally. Currently, only 15% of Germans trust the United States, which is the lowest rate in the history of surveys. For comparison, 78 percent of the population trusts France, and 74 percent trusts Great Britain. At the same time, confidence in Ukraine is 40%, and in Russia - only 9%.

The idea of a European military alliance

The majority of Germans, skeptical of US security guarantees within NATO, are supporting new alternatives. More than half of the respondents say that it is time to create a separate European military alliance, which will be less dependent on NATO.

Domestic political crisis and coalition pressure

Instability in the international arena also negatively affects Germany's domestic policy. The "Black and Red" coalition (XDI/XSI and GSDP) was under intense pressure from voters:

  • Only 20 percent of the population is satisfied with the work of the government.
  • 84 percent of voters are concerned about the internal situation in the country.
  • If the Bundestag elections were held next Sunday, the XDI/XSI bloc could receive 28%, and the "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) could receive 25%.

Economic downturn and migration issues remain the main pain points in society. Many are skeptical about the fate of the ruling coalition in the near future.

In your opinion, can Germany create its own security system independently of the US, or is it more important to maintain ties with NATO?
