Kyiv is being tested in winter: strikes are cutting off water, heat, and light...

Since the start of the heating season, the Ukrainian side reported that Russian forces have documented 256 airstrikes against the country's energy facilities and heat supply systems. According to the statement, since the beginning of October 2025, 11 hydroelectric power plants and 45 large thermal power plants have been "targeted." It was also noted that 49 accurate airstrikes were carried out on thermal power plants, and 151 on power substations in various regions.
The Ukrainian side stated that the strikes were carried out by "Geran" drones, as well as ballistic and cruise missiles such as "Iskander," "Kalibr," "X-101," "X-69." The largest number of shelling occurred in the city of Kyiv and Kyiv region, as well as in Kharkiv, Odessa, Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Mykolaiv, and Chernihiv regions.
It is said that such attacks during the intensification of cold weather lead to large-scale power and heat outages, and in some places, to interruptions in the water supply. Foreign media, however, describe the situation in the capital this winter as one of the most difficult periods since the beginning of the war.
The real picture in Kyiv exacerbated these concerns. In early January, reports emerged of serious power outages in cities and several regions following Russian strikes, and residents were left in the cold. For example, Reuters reports indicated that residential buildings in Kyiv were "opened to the wind," increased pressure on infrastructure, and large-scale strikes were recorded.
The Kyiv city administration has also announced the introduction of emergency shutdowns, and restrictions have been reintroduced in some areas where heating has already been restored due to network problems.
According to experts, the impact on the energy system at the most critical points of winter is a blow not only to electricity, but also to heat, water, transport, and all links of the daily life chain. Therefore, the Ukrainian side also considers the current attacks not a simple military episode, but pressure aimed at disrupting the lives of the population.
In short, winter is always a test. But preparations, quick repairs, and the vigilance of the population will solve a lot. Most importantly, not every interruption means "end": the system will be restored, but this time the cost will be heavier.
