Two landslides in Austria: why did five skiers perish?

In western Austria, in the mountains of the Salzburg region, two successive landslides killed five skiers, and several others were rescued. The incidents were reportedly recorded in the Pongau area south of Salzburg.
According to reports, the first landslide occurred on January 17 near Bad Hofgastein, at an altitude of approximately 2,200 meters. Although the female skier, who was trapped under the snow mass, was rescued by rescuers, she later died. It is noted that her husband survived.
Approximately 90 minutes later, a second landslide occurred in the areas of the Gastein Valley. There, seven skiers were trapped under the snow cover: four people died instantly, two were injured (one of them is in serious condition), and another skier escaped without injuries.
Four rescue helicopters, mountain rescue services, special Red Cross dog groups, and crisis response specialists were quickly deployed to the scene. It is reported that the search and rescue operations lasted several hours.
