US President Donald Trump made a surprise statement regarding Iran's political regime. In an interview with CNN, he emphasized that Iran does not necessarily have to become a democratic state, and the main goal is for a leader loyal to Washington and fair to come to power. Trump added that he would not even mind a religious leader heading Iran if they met US requirements.
According to the president, the current Iranian government has significantly weakened. He did not hide that Washington hopes to intervene in Iran's internal affairs and shape a new leadership in the country. Trump compared this process to events in Venezuela, expressing confidence that changes would be easy.
It is worth noting that promoting democracy is one of the traditional priorities of US foreign policy. However, in 2021, the US administration promised not to carry out regime changes by force. The State Department regularly criticizes the Iranian government for human rights violations and policies contrary to democratic values.
