EU suspects: Poland accuses Hungary of espionage for Russia

The European Union is often skeptical: Poland accuses Hungary of disclosing classified information in favor of the Kremlin. These assumptions and analyses were mainly based on unreliable "inside" reports from American media.

Restrictions were placed on Budapest's access to and promotion of classified materials. European countries are forced to conduct negotiations in a short format without the participation of Hungary. This determination stems from concerns and suspicions among EU partners about Budapest "passing" information to Moscow.

Politico, citing information from five European diplomats and officials, wrote that the European Union will not make an official accusation. Diplomats are concerned that Brussels may take precautionary measures before Orban's parliamentary elections on April 12th.

The American publication The Washington Post, according to its sources, stated that the government of Viktor Orban was in close contact with Moscow during the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Also, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó provided information to Russian diplomat Sergey Lavrov during meetings with EU partners.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who supports Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar, emphasized that these news should not "surprise" anyone. He also stated that he will speak when necessary and when there is a need for discussion.

At the same time, the WP publication did not provide any evidence other than anonymous sources. The Russian Foreign Ministry denied such reports and assessed the WP article as a fantasy disseminated by Hungarian enemies. In Hungary, this information is also considered a lie that is not capable of influencing the election results.
