In the coming years, cancer is projected to overtake cardiovascular diseases as the leading cause of death worldwide. Dr. Maira Caleffi, a surgeon and board member of the Union for International Cancer Control, shared this alarming forecast in an interview with RIA Novosti. She noted that by 2030, cancer mortality rates are expected to exceed those of heart-related conditions.
Despite this growing threat, Caleffi emphasized that many countries are failing to provide adequate political and financial support for cancer control. This lack of attention threatens to worsen the global health crisis in the long term. She specifically pointed out that Latin American nations are not investing enough in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
According to the expert, countries that achieve the best outcomes typically have well-structured cancer care systems, organized health programs, and highly specialized medical centers equipped with advanced technology. These factors significantly reduce mortality rates.
Looking ahead, ensuring equal access to cancer diagnostics and appropriate treatment will become one of the most critical global health challenges over the next few decades. Caleffi stressed that implementing effective prevention strategies is absolutely essential, as they can profoundly alter these grim mortality projections and save countless lives.
